The system opened in 1987 and, according to the ministry, now operates these three lines. A map on your phone makes a transfer between lines much easier.
Paying at the ticket booth
On 9 December 2025 the transport ministry said that the metro operator had rolled out electronic payment machines that accept Visa cards at all ticket booths and subscription offices on Lines 1 and 2. The step is meant to ease congestion at the windows and to reduce delays caused by shortages of small change.
The announcement names Lines 1 and 2 only. Keep some cash for Line 3 and for small purchases around the stations.
If something goes wrong
Passengers can file complaints or questions through the hotline, a dedicated WhatsApp number, the Cairo Metro's official pages, or government complaints offices in several stations. Save the contact details before you ride, because you may not have a signal below ground at every station.
Data for routes and rides
A map, a translation app and a ride app all depend on a connection. An eSIM installed at home on Wi-Fi works when you land in Egypt. Plans and networks are in our Egypt eSIM guide.
