A rate that does not move
The Central Bank of the UAE publishes monthly tables of dirham exchange rates. In its table for 3 August 2026, the US dollar stands at 3.6725. For a visitor paying with a dollar card, the conversion is therefore a fixed number, and only the card fees change what you pay.
- Quick mathsDivide a dirham price by 3.6725 to see the dollar amount.
- Other currenciesThe euro, pound and others still move against the dollar, so their rate changes daily.
Dirham or your home currency at the terminal
Many terminals ask whether you want to pay in dirham or in your home currency. The EU's Your Europe portal says the local currency is often the cheapest option. The alternative looks safer because the amount is exact, yet the extra fees often make it dearer. A trader must tell you exactly how much extra it costs, and you may always refuse.
