Which plan covers Hawaii?
A USA plan. Hawaii is one of the 50 states, so there is no separate Hawaii plan, and the same plan is the one to use on Oahu, Maui, the Big Island and Kauai. The networks it uses, and whether 5G is on, come live from our catalogue below.
- Networks for United StatesAT&T and Verizon
- SpeedUp to 5G on both networks. Where there is no 5G, you connect over 4G/LTE.
Coverage depends more on where you stand than on the plan. Towns, resorts and main roads are well served; mountains, rain forest and lava fields are where a signal can drop. We cannot promise coverage island by island, so if Hawaii is the main reason you are buying, ask us on the Help page first.
Coverage on the islands
What to expect, island by island:
- Oahu: Honolulu and Waikiki have a strong signal. The North Shore and the windward coast are usually fine, but save beach and hiking routes offline.
- Maui: the resort areas on the west and south coasts are well served. The Road to Hana is long, winding and patchy in places, so download your map and bookings before you start.
- Big Island: Kona and Hilo are fine. Volcanoes National Park, Mauna Kea and the long lava-field highways have gaps.
- Kauai: Lihue, Poipu and Princeville are connected. Waimea Canyon and the Na Pali coast are remote, and parts of the trails have no signal.
Short flights link the islands, and you use the same plan on each. Save boarding passes and car bookings on the phone first.
Arriving in Honolulu
Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) in Honolulu is the main gateway. Your eSIM is ready before the plane lands, so arrival takes four steps.
- Switch it on after landing
After landing, switch airplane mode off. Enable data roaming for the eSIM line and select it for mobile data; calls and texts stay with your home SIM.
- Open your map app
Search for your hotel or the rental car pick-up. A map you downloaded at home also works without a signal.
- Order a ride or pick up the car
Ride apps run in Honolulu and Waikiki. For a rental car, keep the booking open on your phone when you reach the counter.
How much data for Hawaii
Maps, messages and ride apps use little. Photos, video calls and music add up. For a week or two, see how much data you need, then pick a size below.
| What the phone does | |
|---|---|
| Getting around | Maps, rental car apps and ride apps: a small amount each day |
| Beach and hikes | Photos and short videos: upload on Wi‑Fi to save data |
| Road days | Offline maps first, then live traffic and bookings on top |
| Evenings | Restaurant search, reviews and messages home |
What you will use data for on a typical trip.
Prefer a daily allowance? 1 GB per day · 7 days for €8.99: full speed up to 1 GB a day, then 512 Kbps until the next day.
Picked like in our shop: the cheapest plan with about 0.7 GB a day. Live prices for United States.
Good to know in Hawaii
- Download offline maps for each island before you set out. Trails, reefs and the Road to Hana are where the signal gets thin.
- The eSIM is data only, so there is no US phone number. Use your home number for calls and messaging apps over data. See Dual SIM on iPhone.
- On a cruise? Mobile service at sea is separate from a land plan, see cruise Wi‑Fi or eSIM.
Going on from Hawaii
Flying on to the mainland? Look at the same USA plan, see the USA eSIM guide and the New York eSIM guide. Heading to Guam or Asia from Honolulu? Plans are per country, so see the Guam eSIM guide or the countries list.
Questions and answers
Is there a Hawaii eSIM?
Hawaii is part of the United States, so you look at the USA plan: there is no Hawaii-only plan. The networks are listed live on this page. If island coverage is critical for your trip, ask us on the Help page before you buy.
Do I buy a new eSIM for each island?
No. You use the same plan on every island, so you do not buy again when you fly. Signal depends on the spot, and mountains and remote coast are weaker.
Can I install the eSIM before I land in Honolulu?
Yes, install it at home over Wi‑Fi a day or two before the flight and switch it on in Honolulu. Many plans start counting when your phone first connects there.
Will I have a signal on the Road to Hana?
Expect gaps. The road is long and winding, so download your map and your bookings before you leave.
Do I get a US phone number with the eSIM?
No. The plan is data only. Your own SIM keeps your number for calls and texts.
