Which plan covers Osaka and Kyoto?

A Japan plan. Osaka and Kyoto are a short train ride apart and use the same networks as the rest of the country. Which networks your phone will use is shown below, live from our catalogue.

  • Networks for JapanKDDI/au, NTT docomo, Rakuten Mobile and SoftBank
  • SpeedUp to 5G on all four networks. Where there is no 5G, you connect over 4G/LTE.
  • Internet runs viaSingaporeDepending on the plan. Banking or streaming apps may treat you as being there.

City centres are covered very well, including the stations and the subways. The thinner spots are hills with temples, some tunnels and quiet country lines.

Coverage around Kansai

The Kansai region is compact and dense. What to expect:

  • Osaka: Umeda, Namba and Osaka Castle are well covered, as are the big theme parks. Timed tickets and queue apps need a signal, so keep data on.
  • Kyoto: the city has strong signal. Hilltop temples and the bamboo groves can be patchy and crowded, so save your route offline.
  • Nara and Kobe: easy day trips with good coverage in the towns and around the main sights.
  • Trains and the Shinkansen: you can check connections on board. Open any mobile ticket or booking once on Wi‑Fi so it is saved on the phone.
  • Osaka Metro: mobile phones work in every station, and in the tunnels between stations, depending on your provider. The city’s “Osaka Free Wi‑Fi” at train stations ended in March 2023, so do not count on station Wi‑Fi.

Kyoto’s buses can be crowded in season. Check live times in your map app, and screenshot opening hours at the hotel.

Arriving at Kansai Airport

Kansai International Airport (KIX) sits on an island in Osaka Bay, with trains to Osaka and Kyoto. Four steps make arrival easy.

  1. Install at home

Install the Japan eSIM over Wi‑Fi a day or two before you leave. Steps: how to use an eSIM in Japan.

  2. Switch it on after landing

Turn on data roaming for the eSIM line and choose it for mobile data. Keep your home SIM for calls and texts.

  3. Choose your train

Your map app shows the next train to Osaka or Kyoto with times and platforms. Save the hotel name in Japanese too.

  4. Add your tickets

Open bookings and timed tickets for the first days, and keep a screenshot as a backup.

Good to know in Osaka and Kyoto

  • Google Maps works well for trains and subways in Japan and shows connections with fares, see Internet in Japan.
  • Free Wi‑Fi in stations and cafés can need a sign-up every time, so keep the eSIM as your steady option.
  • Group trip? If several people share one connection, a pocket Wi‑Fi can make sense, see pocket Wi‑Fi or eSIM in Japan.
  • Keep your own SIM for calls and bank codes. See Dual SIM on iPhone.

Going on from Kansai

The same plan works in Tokyo, Hokkaido and Okinawa, see the Hokkaido eSIM guide and the Okinawa guide. Heading on to Korea? A Japan plan stays in Japan, so add a Korea plan, see the South Korea eSIM guide.

Questions and answers

Do I need separate eSIMs for Osaka and Kyoto?

No. Both are in Japan, so one Japan eSIM covers Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Kobe and the rest of the country.

Will the eSIM work on the trains and subways?

Yes, mobile data works in stations and on most routes. Signal can dip in tunnels and returns at the next stop.

Can I install the eSIM before I land at Kansai Airport?

Yes. Install it at home over Wi‑Fi, then switch it on after you land. Most Japan plans start when your phone first connects there.

Is a pocket Wi‑Fi better for Osaka and Kyoto?

For one or two people an eSIM is simpler: nothing to pick up or return. A group sharing one device may prefer a pocket Wi‑Fi.

Does the eSIM include a Japanese phone number?

No, it is data only. Your own SIM keeps your number for calls and texts.
