Visa or ETA: the official check
Most visitors need an ETA or a visa, says the UK government. An ETA is usually enough if you come from countries such as those in Europe, the USA, Australia or Canada. If your passport is not on that list, you need a visa. The government's own tool shows what applies to you.
gov.uk warns against websites that imitate government services, and notes that other websites may charge more to apply. Start from gov.uk only.
What an ETA is, and is not
- Up to 6 monthsAn ETA lets you travel to the UK, Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man for up to 6 months.
- One per travellerEach person needs their own, including babies and children.
- No promise of entryHolding an ETA does not mean you will be let in. You can check its expiry date online.
- Who does not need oneBritish and Irish passport holders, and people with permission to live, work or study in the UK.
Save it before you fly
- Save the ETA or visa confirmation as a screenshot and as a PDF.
- Keep your accommodation address and return ticket where they open offline.
- Charge your phone before the border, because the officer may ask to see a document.
Online from the arrivals hall
After the border you need a train ticket, a map and a message to your host. An eSIM installed at home on Wi-Fi works when you land. See plans and networks in our UK eSIM guide.
