Which plan covers Istanbul?
A Türkiye plan. Istanbul is the country’s largest city, and the same plan works on the European side, the Asian side and beyond, from Antalya to Cappadocia. The networks your phone uses are shown below, live from our catalogue.
- Networks for TürkiyeTürk Telekom and Vodafone
- SpeedUp to 5G on both networks. Where there is no 5G, you connect over 4G/LTE.
- Internet runs viaNetherlandsDepending on the plan. Banking or streaming apps may treat you as being there.
Signal is strong in the old town, in Beyoğlu, along the Bosphorus and in the business districts. In very busy places such as the Grand Bazaar a crowd can slow any network, so keep a few offline maps.
Coverage around Istanbul
Istanbul is huge and spread over two continents. What to expect:
- Sultanahmet, the Grand Bazaar and Galata: dense old districts with strong signal. The narrow lanes are easy to get lost in, so keep your map open.
- Bosphorus ferries: mobile data works on the water along the main routes. Ferry times and tickets are on your phone.
- The Asian side (Kadıköy, Üsküdar): the same networks and the same plan, nothing to change.
- Trams and the metro: signal is good in stations and on most lines, and returns after the tunnels.
If you land late, save your hotel address in Turkish and in your map app. A driver or the hotel may message you on WhatsApp, so keep data on.
Arriving at Istanbul Airport or Sabiha Gökçen
Istanbul has two big airports. Istanbul Airport (IST) is on the European side, far from the old town, and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is on the Asian side. Your eSIM works at both.
- Switch it on after landing
Turn on data roaming for the eSIM line and choose it for mobile data. No airport Wi‑Fi sign-up needed.
- Plan the way into the city
Airport buses, metro lines and taxis connect to the city. Your map app shows routes and times.
- Book a ride
Taxi apps show the route and the price first. See taxi and ride apps in Istanbul.
How much data for Istanbul
A city break uses less data than a long road trip. Maps, ride apps and translation are light, while photos and video calls add up. See how much data you need, then pick a size below.
| What the phone does | |
|---|---|
| Getting around | Maps, ride apps, tram and ferry times |
| Sightseeing | Tickets, opening hours and translation |
| Food and shopping | Reviews, menu translation and payments |
| Home and photos | Messages home; upload photos on hotel Wi‑Fi |

Good to know in Istanbul
- Local SIM or eSIM? A travel eSIM needs no queue at a shop. More in the Türkiye eSIM guide.
- Roaming from home: many carriers charge extra in Türkiye, see roaming costs in Türkiye.
- WhatsApp is everywhere. Hotels, guides and drivers use it, see keep WhatsApp on a travel eSIM.
- Keep your own SIM for calls and bank codes. See Dual SIM on iPhone.
Going on from Istanbul
The same Türkiye plan covers Cappadocia, Izmir and the Turquoise Coast. Flying on to Greece? A Türkiye plan stays in Türkiye, so look at the Greece guide or a regional plan in the regions list.
Questions and answers
Do I need a separate eSIM for Istanbul?
No. Istanbul is part of Türkiye, so a Türkiye eSIM covers it, on both the European and the Asian side.
Does the eSIM work at Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gökçen?
Yes. After landing, switch on data roaming for the eSIM, at either airport.
Does it work on the Bosphorus ferries?
Mobile data works along the main routes. Signal can dip briefly, so do not rely on it for a live stream.
Can I install the eSIM before I fly?
Yes. Install it at home over Wi‑Fi and switch it on after you land. Most Türkiye plans start when your phone first connects there.
Do I get a Turkish phone number?
No. The eSIM is data only. Your own SIM keeps your number for calls and texts.
