Is Türkiye in EU roaming? No, and here is why it matters
Roam like at home covers the EU and the EEA, plus Moldova and Ukraine. Türkiye is not on that list, so your carrier charges its own prices there. Your normal allowance does not apply in Türkiye unless your tariff says so.
What your carrier charges for a week (10/2026)
| Cheapest option for about 5 GB in a week | |
|---|---|
| Telekom (Germany) | SurfPass Türkiye M: 15 GB for 14 days |
| Vodafone (Germany) | EasyTravel day package, 7 days |
| O2 (Germany) | No add-on: billed per MB |
| A1 (Austria) | Roaming Pass, five times 1 GB |
| Magenta (Austria) | Internet BIH/SRB/TUR: 5 GB for 1 month |
| Drei (Austria) | Go Select: 5 GB for 15 days |

The per-MB trap without an add-on
If your contract has no Türkiye option, data can be billed by the megabyte. An hour of Instagram or TikTok uses about 0.5 to 1 GB, so a few careless hours can outgrow any pass. It usually happens in one of these ways:
- Data roaming left on for the home SIM after landing in Antalya or Istanbul
- Photos backing up during the hotel transfer
- WhatsApp downloading videos from the family group automatically
Cheaper: a travel eSIM for the same data (live price)
Prefer a daily allowance? 1 GB per day · 7 days for €4.99: full speed up to 1 GB a day, then 512 Kbps until the next day.

- Networks for TürkiyeTürk Telekom and Vodafone
- SpeedUp to 5G on both networks. Where there is no 5G, you connect over 4G/LTE.
- Internet runs viaNetherlandsDepending on the plan. Banking or streaming apps may treat you as being there.
The eSIM runs on the Turkish networks listed above at one prepaid price. When the data is used up, it stops. There is no bill afterwards. For coverage and apps, see our Türkiye guide.
Turn roaming off on your home SIM
- iPhone: Settings → Mobile Service → your home line → Data Roaming off.
- Samsung: Settings → Connections → Mobile networks → Data roaming off for the home SIM.
- Then choose the travel eSIM for mobile data and switch its data roaming on.
More on each setting: data roaming on or off.
Calls and SMS in Türkiye
- Incoming calls on your German or Austrian SIM can cost money outside the EU, so check before you pick up long calls.
- WhatsApp calls over the eSIM only use data.
- Hotel and transfer numbers: save them with +90, so you can reach them from any line and app.
Why phone registration does not apply to a travel eSIM
Türkiye’s registration rule is about foreign phones running on Turkish SIM cards: after a while they must be registered or they get blocked. A travel eSIM is not a Turkish SIM. It roams on Turkish networks, so your phone needs no registration for it.
Questions and answers
Is Turkey (Türkiye) covered by EU roaming?
No. Türkiye is not part of the EU roaming rules.
Do I pay roaming for WhatsApp in Türkiye?
Not over a travel eSIM. WhatsApp then uses its prepaid data. Over your home SIM, WhatsApp data counts as roaming data.
Can I still receive calls on my German or Austrian number?
Yes, if your home SIM stays on. Incoming calls in Türkiye can cost money, so check your carrier’s prices or let calls go to voicemail.
Which Turkish networks does the eSIM use?
The ones listed above, live from our catalogue. The same list is on the Türkiye page.
